If you’re looking to invest in jewellery that speaks to a bygone era, whether that’s the roaring Jazz
Age, or the Industrial Revolution, then you’ll want to do a little bit of research. Exactly which design
elements are speaking to you? What is it about the character of the period that appeals to you? And
what practical concerns might limit your choice of ring?

Certain elements tend to be present only in older styles of jewellery. Think about milgrain edging,
which involves drawing attention to a boundary between planes, using a series of tiny metal beads.
The term comes from the French for ‘thousand grains’.
Then there’s the filigree, which is a kind of intricate, showy metalwork that imitates lace. In either
case, what attracts our attention tends to be the detail on offer. It’s not just that modern designs are
more Spartan and minimalistic, it’s that detail tends to tie certain forms to certain eras.
Every era has a different kind of detailed metalwork, but simple designs tend to be timeless. Since
timelessness might not be what we’re looking for, it’s often better to favour detailed designs.
When you’re buying a ring of any kind, it’s worth thinking about the experience of actually wearing it.
This is where modern techniques can make a big difference. We now have greater control over the
width of a band, the height of a setting, and the shape of a profile. This might allow a new ring to
make a better fit for the rigours of modern life.
This applies to all rings that are going to be worn regularly, over a long period of time. Men’s wedding
bands and engagement rings would both qualify.
Of course, we could always enjoy the aesthetic advantage of an older ring by picking up something
that was actually produced during the period in question. But modern rings are able to keep the stone
secure, and to recreate vintage designs without being vulnerable to damage in the same way as an
antique might be.
Many couples seek to bring together vintage and modern influences to create a design that brings two
distinct periods together. In many cases, the result can be a design that sits apart from the trends of
fashion and speaks to an individual’s particular tastes.
