Learn how to create a DIY faux fireplace with mantle. By adding a faux fireplace mantle to your space you instantly create a cozy farmhouse atmosphere.

This simple beginner DIY tutorial will walk you through all the materials and steps to build your own amazing insert with our black farmhouse mantle.

Materials Needed

• Antique Farmhouse Mantle
• 1/2″ Thick Plywood
• Aluminum Brass Sheet
• Black Paint
• #8 x 1 in. Zinc Plated Phillips Flat Head Wood Screws

Tools Needed

• Measuring Tape
• Pencil
• Drill
• Paint brush

We started by measuring the inside of the mantle opening. Having a piece of plywood cut to 31″ x 36″.

Purchasing an entire sheet of plywood from Home Depot was a more affordable option. We decided to make a box for the mantle to sit on to raise the height.

Here are the measurements of the box we created in case you are wanting to make one for your DIY mantle.

• Small sides 9 1/2” x 12”
• Long sides are 45 1/2” x 9.5”
• Top and bottom 12” x 45 1/2”

Preparing the Insert

The first thing we did was take the metal grate, which was the perfect size. We didn’t even have to cut it down!

Using the screws we secured the grate to each end of the mantle. Then went back through and added more throughout the middle.

Securing the Insert

Next it was time to place the painted plywood over the grate. Secure that the same way as you did the grate.

We wanted an antique feel to the room, so filling it with vintage books just seemed fitting. Next we added in some greenery and vintage trinkets to bring the entire vision to life.
