This has to be one of the best southern appetizers I have ever made! This fried green tomatoes recipe is not only pretty simple, it is delicious. I love how the green tomato flavor pairs with the golden breading, the perfect crunch with every witch every single bite.
Last month we were in Nashville, and I tried fried green tomato’s for the first time, I was hooked. We could not wait to get home and make them myself.
Red tomatoes are just way too ripe, they are often too soft, and too seedy. They are also not the right texture to hold up during the frying process.
When you are choosing your green tomatoes, you want to get full size ones, that are firm, not hard. Sometimes you may find a green tomato with slight yellow tint, this tells you it is full size, but not ripe yet.
You will want to cut your tomatoes into 1/4-inch slices. Next I will season them with salt and pepper. Once this is complete you want to dip your tomatoes into the batter.
If you don’t have access to a pre-made mix you would want to mix your eggs and your buttermilk in a bowl and set aside. Next combine 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, cornmeal, 1 tsp. salt, water, and pepper in a small bowl. You will then want to dip your tomato slices in the remaining flour, then into the egg mixture, and finally in the cornmeal mixture. Place in pan to cook.
You can use a regular skillet or a cast iron skillet. Heat up your vegetable oil, I prefer medium heat until it reaches 350°c. Next you want to drop each battered green tomato into the oil. Cook until each side, about 2 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Place them on a plate lined with a paper towel. Sprinkle with salt.
If your green tomatoes come out soggy, this means your oil was not hot enough. Try the. steps again once your oil is heated to right temperature.
That’s it! It is literally that simple. With only a few key ingredients you will have an amazing fried green tomato recipe your family and friends will love.
You can easily use this recipe to fry other foods such as pickles, cucumbers, onions, or zucchini. I also tried cucumbers and onions and they tasted amazing. We had a fun filled fried snack extravaganza.
